There is too much reporting and not enough investigating. The art of muckraking have evolved greatly in scope, style, technique. But the core remains the same in exposing corruption, wrong doing. Most investigative reporters were employed by nonpartisan news media outlets and practice a more objective style of storytelling. Throughout it all, this kind of muckraking has been cyclical, waxing and waning over time. In truth, the perceived woes that currently beset investigative journalism should not be surprising.
After all, powerful individuals and institutions rarely make it easy to uncover their transgressions. Muckraking has never been for the faint of heart. Every generation of journalists faces its unique challenges, of course, but the cycles of investigative reporting are eternal: corruption, then exposure, then reform— followed by more corruption, more exposure, and more reform. If history is any guide, no matter what form it takes, muckraking has bright future.
Just like the venality it exposes, as an institution, it will last for ever in some form. They need innovative, rigorous, culturally relevant curricula that can make a meaningful difference in the lives of their students. Making a difference can extend far beyond schools. Students are our future leaders. As we face the many problems posed by the pandemic, students can show us how to solve them. Our district could help make this a reality by leveraging the expertise of those already doing the work.
A committee of teachers, in collaboration with students, parents and local organizations, could select or create curricula relevant to our community. Extensive, ongoing teacher training and preparation will be needed to fully develop and implement these curricula. In these chaotic times, students need a culturally responsive and relevant approach to instruction that creates engaging, collaborative, standards-based learning.
