I won't even be able to return it when I am back at xmas assuming this would be covered by the 1 year warranty which I think it damn well should be! Is there any way this could be due to the old owner corrupting the GB drive and if so how do I fix this? The fact that it had all of his stuff on there suggested it was the previous owners actual drive and not some fake one he had just slipped in prior to trading it in. Is there another way to tell? It is possible the previous owner messed it up somehow, but usually that would cause the console to not even read the hard drive, or see it as a flash drive and not a hard drive.
Also, the fake hard drives that float around will work with content, so the previous owner could have still had his stuff saved to the drive. Either way, even if it has been reconfigured, there's no way to make it a gb hard drive again. Stuff like this is one of the reasons why it's better to buy new stuff when dealing with your hardware.

Part of it is for system files and part of the reason is because of how manufacturers label hard drives. Hard drive manufacturers round up the amount of storage space to make it an even number, but because of the way storage size is actually calculated, hard drives have less than that amount of storage space. You could get an external USB hard drive with at least 16GB and use that connected to the console to be able to play the game. Yes , you can play games from the disc without hard drive offline but cannot download games online and play it.
